Sega Shiseido project beauty

Shiseido and Sega have collaborated to come up with a new product for the DS machine, which Sega has trademarked in Japan called Project Beauty.

Due for launch in Japan on 27th November 2008,  Project beauty is designed for the Nintendo DS and includes a scanning device that transfers digital images of the user’s face onto one of the two screens. The software will scan the facial features and on the second screen come up with a suggested look, depending on the occasion. There will also be a users palette, which will enable console users to try their own looks and colours.

“The same user can have a variety of make-up tips for different occasions such as business, dating or formal gatherings. You would find colors that are good on you but you never realised before,” said Sega spokeswoman Rei Sugiyama as quoted in the AFP.

Technology and cosmetics are taking closer steps.

Last summer Hewlett Packard announced its work on an offering matching colours by mobile phone. The user sending a face image, by phone to a server and based on a databse match, a range of suggested products are sent back to the user.

Parabens

Parabens have long been used as preservatives in the cosmetics industry, but recently reports are emanating, they may not be as safe as previously thought. Parabens have a similar effect on the body to estrogen.

Excessive amounts of parabens in the body, research has shown, results in reduced muscle mass, which leads to weight gain and extra fat storage.

It has long been known, parabens can cause skin irritation and contact dermatitis in individuals with paraben allergies, which is, to clarify, a small percentage of the general population. In general parabens are non-irritating and non-sensitizing.

More recent studies are pointing to some other issues, particularly in relation to topical treatments. Studies have found that the biggest risk from parabens seems to be from the use of products that require a prolonged exposure to skin, such as skin creams and facial lotions with up to 60% of whatever we put on our skin going into our bloodstream.

A study undertaken in Japan indicated that certain cosmetic products may cause skin to age excessively when exposed to ultra-violet rays. Ironically, this compound, methylparaben, is often found in products designed to help aging skin.

There are also comments regarding the possible link between parabens and breast cancer, however there is as yet, no scientific evidence to support these comments.

Because of the proven issues over the use of parabens in cosmetic products, more companies are moving away from the use of parabens in their formulations, one such is AdorageMD. The acronymic name of the company Adore Your Skin at any Age. The skin care line is designed for women who want to be happy with their skin and appearance at all ages.
